A 1×2 is sold and labeled as 1×2, but it actually measures ¾" × 1½". The difference comes from milling and drying — the board starts closer to its named size, then shrinks as it's surfaced smooth and dried to standard moisture content.
Furring strips, lattice, garden stakes, shims
1x2 is thin and prone to cupping — sight down the length of the board in the aisle before buying, and expect more waste per board than thicker stock.
